Vintage traditional Bogolan, Mali

Brown dye on a natural cotton

The basic fabric is a relatively loosely woven cotton, made from a possibly hand-spun cotton widely grown in Mali. "Bogolan" means mudcloth or "from the eatrh" in Bambara. This refers to the substance used to dye the fabric, which is a kind of fermented mud.
